Dating With Purpose: Five Questions Worth Asking Early

Harpply Editorial·

Two people talking over coffee

Most dating advice starts with attraction and works backwards. Faith-centred dating tends to run the other way: you start with what a life is built on, and let everything else follow from there.

None of this is about interrogating someone over a first coffee. It's about not spending six months avoiding the questions that would have told you everything in the first three weeks.

Why the early questions matter

Shared values are not a topic you graduate from. They're the thing you keep returning to — how you spend money, how you handle conflict, what Sunday morning looks like, whether faith is a practice or a label.

The questions you avoid early become the conversations you can't have later.

The five questions

1. What does your faith actually look like on a Tuesday?

Not the statement of belief — the practice. Tuesdays are where a life is really lived.

2. What are you building toward?

Ambition is not the same as direction. Someone can be extremely busy and still have no idea where they're going.

3. How do you handle being wrong?

You will find out eventually. Finding out early is cheaper for everyone involved.

4. Who has permission to tell you hard things?

People with no accountability are not free — they're unprotected. Ask who is allowed to challenge them.

5. What did your last relationship teach you?

Listen for whether they learned something, or just survived something. The difference matters.

Things worth noticing

  • Whether they ask you questions back.
  • Whether their answers change depending on who's listening.
  • Whether they're curious about your faith or just tolerant of it.

Dating with purpose isn't about having every answer. It's about being willing to ask, early, while the questions are still cheap. Our membership plans are a good place to start, and worth a look.
