Hearing God When the Relationship Is Unclear
Harpply Editorial·

Discernment is the word Christians reach for when they do not want to admit they are confused. That is fair — confusion is uncomfortable. But confusing feelings with guidance is how people stay stuck for months.
God is not usually silent. We are often noisy. Discernment starts by quieting the parts of us that already know what answer we want.
What discernment is not
- A single dramatic sign that removes all risk.
- Using Scripture as a fortune-telling tool for one name.
- Waiting forever because deciding feels scary.
Peace is not the same as comfort. Sometimes the peaceful choice is the hard one.
A simple way to pray when you are stuck
1. Tell God the real question
Not “bless this relationship.” Try: “Should I stay, slow down, or leave — and what am I afraid of either way?”
2. Invite wise people in
Discernment in isolation is usually just preference with religious language. Ask people who love you and are willing to disagree with you.
3. Watch for fruit over time
Over weeks, not hours: are you growing in honesty, kindness, and faith — or shrinking into anxiety and performance?
When it is time to decide
- Write down what you know for sure — facts, not hopes.
- Write down what you keep hoping will change without evidence.
- Choose the next faithful step, not the final forever answer.
